If you’re coordinating care for a client reporting neck pain, stiffness, or reduced head movement, physiotherapy is one of the most effective first-line interventions. This post covers what to expect from a mobile physiotherapy referral for neck pain, and how Bayside Mobile Physio can support your clients across Greater Sydney.
Why Neck Pain Is So Common in Older Adults and NDIS Participants
Neck pain is one of the most frequently reported musculoskeletal complaints among older Australians and people living with disability. It often develops gradually and can significantly affect a client’s quality of life, independence, and ability to participate in daily activities.
Common contributing factors in your client group include:
Prolonged time spent in one position — particularly relevant for clients with limited mobility or those who spend extended periods in bed, a wheelchair, or a recliner.
Degenerative changes — age-related wear in the cervical spine is extremely common and often causes persistent stiffness, aching, or referred pain into the shoulders and arms.
Poor posture — clients who have experienced a stroke, neurological condition, or prolonged deconditioning often develop postural changes that place excessive load on the neck.
Reduced activity levels — without regular movement, the muscles supporting the cervical spine weaken over time, making the neck more vulnerable to pain and injury.
What a Mobile Physiotherapy Assessment for Neck Pain Involves
When one of our physiotherapists visits your client for a neck pain assessment, they conduct a thorough clinical evaluation in the client’s own home. This includes:
Subjective History
The physiotherapist will discuss the onset, nature, and duration of the client’s neck pain, as well as any aggravating or relieving factors. They will also screen for red flags that may require onward medical referral — such as pain following a fall, significant trauma, or neurological symptoms like numbness or weakness in the arms.
Physical Assessment
Range of movement testing to identify restrictions in neck rotation, flexion, extension, and lateral movement.
Postural assessment to identify any contributing factors related to the client’s sitting or lying position.
Neurological screening where indicated, to rule out nerve involvement.
Palpation of the cervical and upper thoracic spine and surrounding musculature.
Functional assessment — how neck pain is affecting the client’s ability to dress, eat, communicate, or participate in their daily routine.
Goal Setting
The physiotherapist will discuss realistic goals with the client and, where appropriate, with family members or support workers present. Goals are documented and shared with you as the referring coordinator on request.
Treatment Approaches for Neck Pain Delivered at Home
Mobile physiotherapy for neck pain is not limited by the home setting. Our physiotherapists bring everything they need to deliver effective treatment, including:
Manual therapy — hands-on techniques to improve joint mobility and reduce muscle tension in the cervical and upper thoracic spine.
Therapeutic exercise — a tailored home exercise program targeting the deep neck flexors and scapular stabilisers, which are commonly weak in clients with chronic neck pain.
Postural correction — practical advice and positioning adjustments relevant to the client’s home environment, including pillow height, chair setup, and screen position where applicable.
Education — helping clients and their support networks understand the nature of neck pain, what to expect during recovery, and how to self-manage between sessions.
Heat and other physical modalities where clinically appropriate.
When to Refer a Client for Neck Pain Physiotherapy
As a care coordinator or case manager, you do not need a GP referral to refer a client to Bayside Mobile Physio for neck pain under most funding streams. There are some clinical indicators that suggest physiotherapy is particularly appropriate:
The client reports persistent neck stiffness or pain lasting more than two to three weeks.
Neck pain is limiting the client’s ability to participate in personal care, meals, or social activities.
The client has recently experienced a fall and is reporting new neck pain or stiffness — provided serious injury has been excluded medically.
The client has a neurological condition such as Parkinson’s disease or stroke and is developing secondary postural or musculoskeletal changes affecting the neck.
The client is reluctant or unable to travel to a clinic.
If you are unsure whether physiotherapy is appropriate for a particular client, feel free to contact our office and we can discuss the referral with you directly.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the physiotherapist bring equipment to the home?
Yes. Our physiotherapists carry all equipment needed for assessment and treatment. Home exercise programs are designed around what the client already has available at home.
How many sessions will my client need?
This varies depending on the nature and duration of the client’s neck pain, their overall health, and their goals. After the initial assessment the physiotherapist will provide a recommended treatment plan, which we can share with you as the referring coordinator.
Can the physiotherapist communicate with other members of the care team?
Yes. We are happy to liaise with GPs, occupational therapists, and other allied health providers involved in your client’s care. Please let us know at the time of referral if there are specific team members you would like us to communicate with.
What if my client’s neck pain requires further investigation?
If the physiotherapist identifies clinical indicators that suggest the client requires imaging or specialist review, they will communicate this to you and to the client’s GP as appropriate.
