From 1 October 2026, changes to NDIS funding are being introduced as participant plans are created, reassessed or renewed.
One of the affected budgets is the one most participants use to pay for physiotherapy. So it’s worth understanding what’s changing, and how to keep getting the most out of the therapy funding in your plan.
At Bayside Mobile Physio, we provide NDIS physiotherapy home visits across Sydney for adult self-managed and plan-managed participants, delivered in their own home and community.
What Has Changed With NDIS Funding?
Under the Australian Government’s changes to the NDIS, two support budgets are being reduced:
- Social, economic and community participation supports are being reduced by 50%
- Improved daily living skills supports are being reduced by 10%
These reductions aren’t applied to every plan on 1 October. They’re introduced progressively as new plans are created, plans are reassessed, or existing plans are renewed over the following months.
Some supports are not part of the reductions, including personal care, community nursing, home and vehicle modifications, personal mobility equipment and Specialist Disability Accommodation. The Department of Health, Disability and Ageing has the full list.
What This Means for NDIS Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy and other therapy supports are usually funded from the Capacity Building Improved Daily Living budget. That’s the budget receiving the 10% reduction.
A reduction to a budget doesn’t automatically mean a participant has to cut their therapy by the same amount. But it does make it more important to plan how therapy funding is used across the life of the plan.
A few practical steps can help:
- Check your Improved Daily Living budget when your new or reassessed plan arrives, so you know what’s available for therapy.
- Agree on session frequency with your physiotherapist, based on your goals and the funding in your plan.
- Ask about travel charges. NDIS pricing rules allow providers to claim travel time, and that comes out of the same budget as your therapy.
- Keep progress reports up to date, so there’s clear evidence of your needs and outcomes at your next plan reassessment.
Bayside Mobile Physio doesn’t charge travel fees within our Sydney service areas, so more of your funding goes towards therapy time. You can read more about our no travel fee policy for NDIS physiotherapy.
Can an NDIS Physiotherapist Come to Your Home?
Yes.
For participants with physiotherapy funding in their NDIS plan, physiotherapy can usually be provided at home rather than in a clinic.
Home visits can be particularly useful for participants who:
- Have limited mobility or difficulty walking
- Need help leaving the house or accessing transport
- Use mobility aids or equipment
- Have a history of falls
- Find travelling to appointments physically demanding
- Benefit from being assessed in their usual home environment
Whether physiotherapy can be funded through an individual plan depends on the participant’s circumstances, goals, plan and current NDIS rules.
Why Consider Mobile Physiotherapy?
Home physiotherapy isn’t only about convenience.
Seeing a participant in their own environment lets the physiotherapist assess how they actually move and function day to day. Depending on the participant’s needs, a home physiotherapy assessment may include:
Mobility and walking
How the participant moves around their home, including walking, turning and managing steps and different surfaces.
Transfers
Getting in and out of bed, standing from a chair, and getting on and off the toilet, assessed where these tasks actually happen.
Falls risk
Physical and environmental factors that may contribute to falls, identified as part of a broader assessment. Our falls prevention physiotherapy page has more detail.
Strength and balance
Individualised exercise programs built around the participant’s goals and the space and equipment they have at home.
Mobility equipment
Recommendations on mobility aids or equipment where clinically indicated.
Carer and support worker education
Guidance for family members, carers and support workers on safe transfers, mobility and home exercise programs.
Physiotherapy Focused on Functional NDIS Goals
NDIS physiotherapy should relate to the participant’s disability-related needs and goals. With funding under more pressure, goal-focused therapy matters even more.
Our physiotherapists commonly support goals such as:
- Improving mobility, walking, strength and balance
- Reducing falls risk
- Maintaining physical function and independence at home
- Improving transfers
- Building confidence with everyday movement
Recommendations are always based on each participant’s individual assessment. For more on how this works, see the role of physiotherapists in the NDIS.
Working With Support Coordinators and Plan Managers
We work with participants, families, support coordinators, plan managers and the participant’s wider support team.
Our team can help with:
- Initial physiotherapy assessments and ongoing home physiotherapy
- Falls prevention, exercise and rehabilitation programs
- Mobility aid and equipment recommendations
- Physiotherapy reports and progress updates, including plan review reports
- Communication with the participant’s broader care team
Appointments are usually arranged within the same week or the following week of referral.
